Roof Box on Aluminum Roof Rack: Compatibility Guide for Thule, Hapro, and Atera

But as soon as the owner of such a platform wants to expand it with a closed roof box for clothes, skis, or soft bags, a crucial question arises: Do the factory clamps of the box fit on a wide 88 mm crossbar?
The answer depends on two factors: the brand of the box and the generation of the clamping system. There's only a one-centimeter difference between Thule PowerClick (90 mm) and Thule FastClick (80 mm) – but this exact difference determines whether the box fits ex works or if T-slot adapters need to be purchased. Here's a summary from official manufacturer instructions and practical recommendations for wide profiles, including Airholder platforms for VW T6/T6.1 and Land Rover Defender 110.
Two mounting methods for roof boxes on crossbars
All modern roof boxes can be broadly divided into two groups:
Claw systems (quick-release clamps). A clamp with a torque indicator encloses the crossbar from above and below and presses against the bottom of the box. Each brand has its own name for it: Thule PowerClick, Hapro Premium-Fit, Atera Premium-Fit, Hapro Master-Fit, the older Thule FastClick. Practical for frequent removal and works on most passenger cars.
U-bolt screws. A simple metal bracket that encloses the crossbar from below and is tightened with two screws through the bottom of the box. Installed in cheaper models: Menabo, Hapro Roady, older series from Modula and Kamei.
Separately, T-slot adapters should be mentioned: adapters with T-screws that are pushed directly into the longitudinal groove of the aluminum profile. This is not a separate mounting system, but a universal alternative to clamps for platforms with a wide profile.
The core question: Does the box fit on an 88 mm profile?
If you have a wide aluminum roof rack with an crossbar profile of 88 mm (typical width for Airholder and other expedition systems), here's what you get:
Boxes that fit with factory claws:
- All current Thule with PowerClick: Motion 3, Force 3, Vector, Pulse 2 – permissible up to 90 mm
- Hapro Trivor, Traxer, Cruiser, Nordic, Zenith with Premium-Fit – up to 95 mm
- Hapro Carver (6.3, 6.5, 8.5) with Master-Fit – up to 90 mm
- Atera Casar with Premium-Fit – up to 95 mm
- ATU Bermude (100–500) with Master-Fit – up to 95 mm
Boxes that require a T-slot adapter for 88 mm:
- Thule Touring with old FastClick (only up to 80 mm)
- Menabo Mania / Marathon / Venom / Diamond (U-bolt, encompassing range 56–80 mm)
- Hapro Roady (U-bolt, 56–60 mm)
In a nutshell: If you choose between the Thule PowerClick series and Hapro/Atera Premium-Fit – any of these boxes will fit on 88 mm without additional parts. If, on the other hand, you're considering a cheaper Menabo or the older Thule Touring, you should plan for T-slot adapters right away.

The second hurdle: profile height
Width is only half the battle. The second critical value is the height of the crossbar – and here the rules are stricter than they seem:
- Thule PowerClick: 18–30 mm
- Hapro Master-Fit (Carver): 18–35 mm
- Premium-Fit (Hapro, Atera, Bermude): 18–38 mm for aerodynamic crossbars, 18–28 mm for rectangular ones
What this means in practice: Most expedition platforms have a profile of 28–32 mm in height – this falls within the permissible range of all claw systems. However, if the crossbar is rectangular and taller than 28 mm, Premium-Fit from Hapro and Atera is officially not certified. While the clamp would grip, the torque indicator might not trigger correctly. A rare but important case: if you have a non-aerodynamic, tall rectangular profile, you should choose Thule (approved up to 30 mm for any shape) or go directly for T-slots.
Vehicle height with roof rack: What to consider before travel
A platform on the roof doesn't just mean more storage space – it also changes the overall height of the vehicle. This is crucial for:
- Entry into underground garages and multi-story car parks (German standard: 2.00–2.10 m)
- Passage under barriers and bridges
- Calculation of permissible height on toll roads and campsites
With the modular Airholder platform, the factory height increase is approximately +55 mm to the top edge of the profile. This figure is confirmed by the manufacturer for the VW T6/T6.1. An important detail: Airholder is designed so that a deliberate gap of approx. 30 mm remains between the roof skin and the underside of the profile. This has two reasons:
1. Ventilation for solar modules. Those who install solar panels (a popular option for T6 campervan conversions) absolutely need air circulation – otherwise, the panel will overheat and lose efficiency.
2. Access to fastenings all around. Route cables, clean the roof, mount accessories, without being "stuck" directly to the roof membrane.
Concrete figures for the VW T6/T6.1 with Airholder
Calculation according to the manufacturer:
- VW T6 according to drawing data: 1990 mm (can vary depending on tires, air pressure, and load)
- Airholder platform on top: +55 mm to top edge of profile
- Total height: approx. 2045 mm (≈ 2.05 m) – vehicle with empty platform
This means: A T6 with an Airholder will no longer fit into a standard car park with a 2.00 m height limit. It requires car parks with a height of 2.10 m or more, with a safety margin. If a box or roof tent is mounted on top, their height is added:
- Roof box 40 cm height → total ~2.45 m
- Hardshell roof tent → total ~2.30–2.40 m
- LED light bar + spoiler → +5–8 cm
Before the first trip, it is advisable to use a tape measure and measure the actual height with the platform mounted – the factory data value of 1990 mm can vary by 1–3 cm depending on tires and load.
When the T-slot adapter is better than the clamp
Even if the platform formally falls within the tolerance of PowerClick or Premium-Fit, there are three scenarios where T-slot adapters are objectively better:
1. Off-road and long distances. Claws create localized pressure on the box bottom and crossbar. This is not noticeable on asphalt, but on gravel and unpaved roads, the fastenings can loosen after 2000 km. A T-bolt distributes the load along the entire groove and does not "play" with vibrations.
2. Aerodynamics and ground clearance. A box on a T-slot adapter sits 1–3 cm lower than on clamps. Less wind resistance, lower consumption, quieter driving noise. Noticeable on long distances – and with the T6/T6.1, where the total height already exceeds 2 m, every centimeter counts.
3. Precise centering. Claws only fix themselves in the mounting holes of the box – the position is rigidly predetermined. T-screws slide through the groove with millimeter precision, allowing the box to be perfectly aligned with the roof and leaving room for the tailgate.
Conclusion: For permanent mounting on an expedition platform, the T-slot is almost always the right choice. Claws are only justified if the box is only mounted on the roof for the holiday season.
Mounting via T-slot: the correct Thule item numbers
At Thule, T-slot adapters are officially divided by clamp generation – each system gets its own set. According to instruction 5560793001:
Set 696400 / 697400 (T-bolt 20×27 mm) – for boxes with:
- FastClick / FastGrip: Thule Touring, Pacific
- PowerGrip: Thule Excellence, Spirit, Atlantis
Set 696600 / 697604 (T-bolt 20×27 mm) – for boxes with:
- PowerClick / PowerClick G2: Thule Excellence XT, Dynamic, Motion (without "3")
- PowerClick G3: Thule Force XT, Motion XT, Vector
Before ordering the adapters, the width of the T-slot of your own platform must be checked. For 24×30 mm there are sets "6964xx" and "6966xx", for the narrower 20×27 mm "6974xx" and "6976xx". Most expedition platforms have a 20 mm slot, but the exact value should be in the carrier's datasheet.
For Hapro, Atera and ATU Bermude, T-slot adapters are usually supplied directly by the box manufacturer or are compatible with universal adapters – please check the respective product description for details.
Distance between crossbars
For most 4-point mounting boxes (PowerClick, Premium-Fit), the following official values apply:
- Minimum: 60 cm (according to Thule – 23⅝", or 557 mm for the Vector)
- Maximum: ~93 cm (Thule Vector – 932 mm; the limit of the mounting holes for most full-size boxes)
Specifically for the Thule Vector, the instructions state a range of 557–932 mm between the front and rear crossbars. Modular Airholder platforms can be adjusted with millimeter precision – this should be used to achieve the optimum of 70–80 cm while ensuring clearance for the tailgate (R-Min).

Airholder platforms: Specifications for VW T6/T6.1 and Defender 110
Airholder manufactures modular aluminum platforms for specific vehicle models – these are not "universal" crossbars with adapters, but rather complete sets for the factory mounting points. Two of the most sought-after products:
Airholder for VW Transporter T6 / T6.1 (SWB / LWB)
- Compatibility: VW Transporter T5, T5.1, T6, T6.1, Multivan, Caravelle, Kombi
- Configuration: Standard roof + at least 3 base carriers
- Permissible load: 150 kg dynamic (according to VW specifications with ≥3 carriers), up to 300 kg static with even distribution
- Height increase on vehicle: ~55 mm to top edge of profile
A special feature of the T6/T6.1 version is the integrated Airline elements in the side walls. This means: cargo, nets, and accessories can be attached along the entire side wall – not just at a few fixed points. Practical for anyone whose setup is constantly changing: camping today, work tomorrow, expedition the day after tomorrow.
Airholder for Land Rover Defender 110
- Compatibility: Land Rover Defender 110 (New Generation L663, from 2020)
- Mounting: into factory mounting points, without drilling
- Special feature: special mounting brackets with Airline connections – additional slots allow accessories to be attached directly in the bracket area, without adapter plates
For the Defender 110, this is important, as the classic problem with expedition platforms is the need to design individual holders and adapters for each new part (Hi-Lift, shovel, canister). With Airholder, this solution is already integrated into the cast body of the brackets.
General features of the Airholder line
- Material: black anodized aluminum + stainless steel
- Weight: 18–45 kg depending on vehicle model
- Permissible load: at least 100 kg dynamic (prioritizing the manufacturer's specification for the vehicle)
- Mounting: tool-free, clamping system, without drilling the bodywork

- Manufacture: Germany, since 2021
Checklist before buying a box for a wide platform
Four things to check before ordering:
1. Dimensions of your crossbar. Measure the width (across the top surface) and height of the profile with calipers. Write down both values.
2. Mounting system of the desired box. The product card or instructions must state "PowerClick", "Premium-Fit", "Master-Fit", "FastClick", or "U-Bolt". Don't go by the picture of the clamp – go by the name.
3. Presence and width of the T-slot on the platform. For 20×27 mm or 24×30 mm, there are original Thule adapters. For different dimensions, universal T-bolts with a suitable head are required.
4. Final vehicle height. For the T6 with Airholder, this is 2045 mm without accessories, with a box approximately 2400–2500 mm. Check your garage and usual routes in advance.
If you have an 88 mm profile and are choosing between Hapro Traxer and Thule Motion 3 – both fit ex works. Hapro Premium-Fit offers a bit more reserve in width (95 vs. 90 mm) and height for aerodynamic carriers (up to 38 vs. 30 mm for Thule). Thule scores with better available spare parts and the One-Key System, if other Thule accessories are already owned.
