Defender 110 Height with Roof Rack: Chassis, Wheels, and Exact Calculation
Denis KhristolyubovThe height of a Land Rover Defender 110 is not a fixed number. It depends on the suspension settings, wheel/tire size, and the specific configuration. Therefore, for a garage, parking garage, or ferry, you should not rely on a "standard height," but rather on the actual vehicle height of your Defender – and then add the height of the roof rack.
Defender 110 Height: 2000 mm to 2182 mm (depending on settings)
In practice, the vehicle height of the Defender 110 is often in the range of:
✅ 2000 mm – 2182 mm, depending on suspension settings and wheel/tire size.
This means: Two Defender 110s can have different heights – even though they are the same vehicle type.
Why Height Varies
1) Suspension / Vehicle Level
Depending on the setting or suspension level, the vehicle stands higher or lower. For low entrances, always consider the height in the state in which you actually enter.
2) Wheels & Tires (Overall Diameter)
Not just "R20" or "R22" is crucial, but the overall diameter of the tire.
Example: Overall diameter +20 mm → vehicle height approx. +10 mm.
3) Load
Additional load can slightly lower the vehicle. For tight clearances, a safety margin is always advisable.
How Much Height Does Airholder Add to the Defender 110?
The geometry is clear:
-
35 mm – Distance of roof rack above the roof
-
23 mm – Profile height
-
35 + 23 = 58 mm
✅ The Airholder roof rack increases the overall vehicle height by +58 mm.
Formula:
H(Defender 110 with Airholder) = H(Defender 110) + 58 mm

Practical Measurement Point: 237 mm Above the Gutter
For a quick, reproducible measurement, you can orient yourself to a clear body point – not the roof surface:
✅ The roof rack is approx. 237 mm above the gutter – exactly where our consoles/brackets grip the gutter.
This can be easily checked:
-
Find the gutter,
-
measure vertically to the highest point of the roof rack,
-
Reference value: approx. 237 mm.

Maximum Recommended Load: 150 kg (including roof rack)
✅ The maximum recommended total load is 150 kg – including the weight of the roof rack itself, as well as all accessories and cargo on top.
Important: Always also consider the permissible roof load of your Defender 110 – ultimately, the smaller of the two values is always decisive.
Quick Check: Does the Defender 110 with Roof Rack Fit in a Garage or Parking Garage?
-
Park the vehicle on level ground (typical load).
-
Set the suspension to the mode you will use for entry.
-
Measure the actual vehicle height (highest point).
-
Add +58 mm for Airholder.
-
Plan for a 30–50 mm reserve.

Defender 110 Roof Load: Static and Dynamic
For roof load, two values count: static roof load (when stationary, e.g., with a rooftop tent while sleeping) is significantly higher than dynamic roof load (while driving). Land Rover specifies the permissible dynamic roof load in your Defender 110's manual – this value is binding when driving.
For the Airholder, the recommended total load of 150 kg including the roof rack also applies. The smaller of the two values is always decisive – the roof load approved by the manufacturer or the Airholder recommendation.
